In the global engineering environment, it is critical that engineering
organizations be able to seamlessly share engineering data between their
internal departments, supply chain and customers.
Effective data interoperability depends on many factors – intended use of the
resultant data being one of them. Geometry (B-rep) translation (dumb
translation) will suffice for data to be used for analysis, form-fit function,
interference checking, packaging or Digital Mock Up. However, if the converted
model is to be used upstream in the design process where there is a need for
fully modifiable native data, Feature Based Translation (FBT) is the answer -
the result a streamlined data file that acts as though it was created using the
actual commands of the receiving system.
